University of Manitoba

University of Manitoba

Area: Nanomagnetism in thin-films, nanoparticles and quantum spin systems

The Nanomagnetism Research Group (NRG) of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manitoba is inviting applications for M.Sc. and Ph.D. research studentships in experimental condensed matter and materials physics.

The NRG is seeking highly motivated and creative individuals with a sold background in physics, chemistry, materials science or closely related fields with genuine interest in conducting interdisciplinary research in close collaboration with chemists and engineers.

Successful candidates will work on one of several exciting research projects in the areas of nanoparticle and thin-film magnetism (visit www.physics.umanitoba.ca/~johan). The unique combination of skills that you learn will open up excellent employment opportunities in areas of academia, industry and national laboratories.

Research projects will build experience in areas such as:

low temperature physics
instrumentation development and construction
nanoparticle chemical and thin-film synthesis
bulk and atomic level structural characterization (e.g. x-ray, TEM and neutron scattering)
bulk and atomic level magnetic (e.g. SQUID magnetometery, x-ray magnetic resonant scattering/x-ray magnetic circular dichorism, Mossbauer spectroscopy, neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy)
numerical modeling and simulation

The NRG prides itself in providing an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment that enables you to succeed in your learning and research endeavors. Teaching assistantships are available through the Physics and Astronomy Department to gain experience for those interested in pursuing a career in academia or education.

Applicants should have a good B.Sc. or M.Sc. in physics, chemistry or related subjects and send a C.V., statement of career goals and general research interests to Dr. J. van Lierop
