The International Doctorate Program NanoBioTechnology

The International Doctorate Program “NanoBioTechnology” offers doctoral scholarships for outstanding graduate students, starting on October 1st, 2009. Successful candidates will work in the stimulating interdisciplinary environment of the Center for NanoScience(CeNS) based in Munich and become members of the Elite Network of Bavaria. The PhD students will be supervised by principal investigators of CeNS and will be affiliated with the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), the Technical University Munich (TUM) or the University of Augsburg. The recommended duration of the PhD is 3 years.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a Bachelor Degree or equivalent in either the field of physics, chemistry or life sciences and should have finished or prepare for a Master Degree in one of the same fields to be concluded no later than summer 2009. Excellent grades and a very good command of the English language are important prerequisites. We furthermore expect strong scientific motivation and interest in the activities of the doctoral program and interdisciplinary research.

How to Apply

Applications for the program must be submitted together with a statement of interest in one specific PhD project offered by a principal investigator of CeNS. A list of openings for PhD projects is available below. Further PhD projects might be arranged in direct agreement with a group leader of CeNS. For your application, two letters of reference are required. Templates are available for download. The letters should be sent by email to the program office by the referees and not by the applicant!

Applications for the scholarships are only possible via our online application tool.
The deadline for applications is March 31st, 2009!

International Max Planck Research School for Surface and Interface Engineering (IMPRS-SurMat)

The IMPRS-SurMat represents a unique cooperative effort involving the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE) in Duesseldorf, the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Muelheim, and the Ruhr University (RUB) in Bochum. In addition, three research departments from Xiamen University in China, the Department of Materials at the University of Science and Technology, Beijing, and Fudan University, Shanghai closely cooperate with SurMat. The main research objective of the IMPRS-SurMat is to correlate the chemical structure, morphology and mechanical properties of heterogeneous surfaces and buried interfaces with functional properties of the materials and to optimize them by means of advanced surface modification technologies.

The IMPRS-SurMat covers topics ranging from fundamental scientific issues to engineering applications. This includes topics such as material stability (corrosion and interfacial adhesion), local reactivities on heterogeneous surfaces (corrosion and heterogeneous catalysis), and the sophisticated tailoring of surfaces by thin film and nano-structuring techniques. The laboratories within the IMPRS-SurMat consist of the most modern surface and interface analytical techniques and surface technologies.

Students holding either an excellent Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Geo-Science or related subjects can apply for admission.

You will find more information about IMPRS SurMat School as well as about the Max Planck Society at our web site:
