PhD studentship on the theory of spin transport in semiconductors - York, UK

Department of Physics, University of York (UK)

The demand for increasingly faster and smaller electronic devices requires that more and smaller transistors are packed on every chip. This has led to the birth of nanotechnology and, more recently of the nanotechnology field called 'spintronics'. Here not only the charge, but also the spin -- a fundamental property of electrons -- is used in the design of conceptually new devices.

At the basis of spintronics is the understanding of spin dynamics. However key issues such as how to inject a current of spins in a semiconductor, how to sustain it within the device, which materials/nanostructures are best
and what lengths a current of spin can travel in a specific material are still open questions.

This project aims to master the principles underlying the spin dynamics.

Objectives are to fully understand spin transport, diffusion and spin injection into semiconductors, including the effects of many-body interactions like the spin Coulomb drag effect. These properties are important from a fundamental point of view and of great practical interest for developing semiconductor and hybrid (metal/semiconductor) spintronics devices.

This is an EPSRC-funded studentship, with a stipend in line with EPSRC directions. The studentship is funded for EU nationals only.

We are looking for highly motivated students, possibly with a background in solid state physics and good computational skills.

For more details please contact Dr Irene D'Amico, ida500@york.ac.uk.

To apply please go to our Application Procedure page at
http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/phys/gsp/applying.htm or email
phys-grad-admin@york.ac.uk for an application pack.

PhD at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University

MPhil/PhD Programme in Theoretical Physics

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University was declared by Government of India through its Ministry of Human Resource Development as an institution deemed-to-be- University under Section 3 of University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956. It was formally inaugurated on 4 July 2005, the day of mahasamadhi (passing away) of Swami Vivekananda who envisioned just a couple of days before he passed away that Belur Math would develop into an all-round University. Again, it was Swami Vivekananda who inspired Sir Jamshedji Tata to establish an institute for fundamental science in India which resulted in the now famous Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore. In our new University in Swamiji's hallowed name, we have started a School in Mathematical Sciences which has three Departments: Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science. While the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science offer MSc and PhD in their respective subjects, the Department of Physics offers MPhil/PhD in Theoretical Physics.

In most cases the background of students who take a Masters degree in Physics is quite inadequate to start research directly. To orientate the students for research as well as to give them an exposure to the different research areas, the various research institutes across the country have introduced post-M.Sc. courses or pre-Ph.D. courses for their incoming research students. All the Universities in the advanced countries have pre-Ph.D. courses for their students. But then, the Indian Universities offering PhD programmes hardly ever provide any scope for systematic training in advanced Physics at the Post-MSc/Pre-PhD level. This usually leads to the student acquiring on his/her own just enough background with great difficulty, in the very narrow field of his contemplated research topic. As a result, most of these students do not always acquire enough confidence to be able to carry on independent research during their PhD programme nor do they find themselves equipped to take up research in other developing fields at the post-doctoral level. The MPhil course started at our new University is intended to fulfil this important need of (i) providing research orientation to the students and (ii) giving them an opportunity for in-depth study in the various research areas.

The MPhil course in Theoretical Physics is a three-semester course. The first two semesters consist of course work while the third semester would be spent on doing individual projects. Among the courses offered are Advanced Mathematical Physics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, Advanced Statistical Mechanics, Computer Programming and Numerical Methods in Physics, and some Electives like Elementary Particle Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Atomic & Moleculer Physics and Nuclear Physics.

A few selected students will be awarded fellowships (around Rs.4000/- per month) during the MPhil course. After successful completion of the MPhil course, those students who are eager to pursue further research may be allowed to go in for PhD programme and will be offered research fellowships according to availability of resources. Students joining the PhD programme after qualifying at the UGC/CSIR NET examination for Junior Research Fellowship will be able to receive their fellowships through the University.

Open Charm measurement in heavy ion and p+p collisions @ SUBATECH Nantes, France

One of the most outstanding new results of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven Laboratory, USA, is the observation of anomalous energy loss of quarks passing through the dense partonic medium (the so called Quark Gluon Plasma or QGP) formed in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)(NN)=200 GeV. This phenomenon, called "jet quenching", allows for a direct measure of the initial density of partons, an important key for the characterization of the QCD phase transition between hadrons and partons. This transition is believed to have taken place in the early universe, 10^6 seconds after the Big Bang.

One of the biggest puzzles of RHIC is the jet quenching of quarks with heavy flavour (charm and beauty added together) which is larger than the theoretical predictions. Or, the flavour dependence of jet quenching is not yet understood.

The proposed PhD Thesis subject concerns the direct measurement of charm and beauty separately within the STAR experiment at RHIC, in order to resolve the puzzle of flavour dependence of jet quenching. This is possible through data analysis of yields and transverse momentum (pT) dependence of open charm, in particular of the D0, D* particles and charmed baryons in Au+Au and p+p collisions at 200 GeV. Azimuthal angular correlations of those particles with high pT electrons is another tool to disengtangle charm and beauty.

The STAR data needed for this Thesis are already taken and are calibrated and ready to be analysed. Furthermore the software codes (c++, root) needed as basis for this analysis are also available. The large number of already existing and well calibrated data which offer a rich source for future papers within short timespan, are a great advantage of the present work.

In addition there is the chance to get partially involved in the upgrade and support of a silicon detector of STAR, which will start in 2010. This allows to enrich the curriculum vitae with hardware as well as software experience. Finally, in the second part of the Thesis there is the possibility of a participation in the open charm analysis of the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Visits to BNL and CERN laboratories in Long Island and in Geneve are foreseen for this work.

Summarizing, the proposed Thesis subject has the advantage to combine: (1) a competitive physics analysis on a subject attracting a great deal of interest today, namely jet quenching and the QCD phase transition (2) the fact that a big number of well calibrated data exists in STAR as well as the codes for their analysis, allowing for fast results and publications. (3) it allows to accumulate expertise in both software and data analysis as well as in hardware, through an implication in the upgrade of a leading edge technology silicon detector. (4) it allows an implication also in a new experiment just starting at the LHC, at a moment (2011-12) in which an improved understanding and calibration of data will be available. The above aspects allow for a rich and competent Thesis, focused on an important problem of contemporary physics, that captures the interest of the community of â~@~XHigh energy nuclear and particle physics".

The applicant should hold a master's degree in physics, preferably in high-energy particle or nuclear physics as well as a diploma in physics.

The position is available starting in 1st october 2009 for an appointment of three years.

SUBATECH is located in Nantes, a city in the western part of France, 400 km west of Paris.

The STAR SUBATECH group is involved in the physics analysis of charm with microvertexing techniques and the upgrade of a silicon strip detector for the future new silicon tracker of STAR.

Applications, including a CV, university records, and the names and field e-mails; of two academic references willing to provide further information on the candidate should be sent by e-mail to the contact below.

Analysis of Zeus data and future techniques in data acquisition

In collaboration with DESY, Hamburg, the UCL High Energy Physics group is offering a 3-year PhD studentship to start at the end of September 2009. The studentship is to work on the analysis of ZEUS data taken at the HERA electron-proton collider as well as doing technical work in our program of R&D into data acquisition (DAQ) systems suitable for a number of future applications in high energy physics and beyond.

The HERA ep collider finished data taking in 2007 and still has a large physics programme ahead analysing the vast stores of data in order to make precision measurements which will enter text books and not be improved upon for years to come. As part of the ZEUS collaboration, we have been two of the lead institutes in measuring heavy quark production and plan to make the ultimate measurements of their contributions to the structure of the proton. Understanding the structure of matter is one of the primary quests of physics and also has practical applications as the information is needed by the LHC. Initial analysis will involve developing improved algorithms to better detect and reconstruct heavy quarks. The final measurements will then be combined with those from the complementary experiment, H1, and finally included in phenomenological fits to deeper understand the structure of matter. The student would have the opportunity to be involved at all stages of this project.

As part of the technical training in a PhD, the student would also have the opportunity to work on an R&D project in data acquisition systems. UCL is involved in several DAQ projects such as upgrades for the LHC detectors and even areas outside of particle physics. Depending on experience, the student will play a part in all aspects of building DAQ systems: electronics design and testing, firmware and software programming, algorithm development, and integrating the system into beam tests and the final experiment.

The prospective student would be working directly with Dr Matthew Wing at UCL and integrated into the ZEUS-DESY group and ZEUS Collaboration as a whole. They will also join a team of people at UCL working on DAQ projects both in high energy physics and other large-scale projects. It is expected that (s)he will spend roughly half their PhD in UCL and half in DESY, Hamburg.

This position is unfortunately only open to EU nationals. Applications should be submitted according to the instructions on the web page: http://www.hep.ucl.ac.uk/postgrad/ Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Matthew Wing (mw@hep.ucl.ac.uk)
