Accelerator Physics at PSI Villigen (Switzerland)

The Paul Scherrer Institute is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world's leading user laboratories. With its 1300 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and materials sciences, elementary particle physics, energy and environmental research as well as biology and medicine.

For the PSI project of an x-ray free electron laser (PSI-XFEL) we are looking for an

Accelerator Physicist

for the beam dynamics section of the department for large research facilities.

Your tasks

  • Elaborate a concept for trajectory control and correction in the proposed PSI-XFEL.
  • Run simulations for the proposed PSI-XFEL.
  • Prepare tools (algorithms and applications) for measurements and data evaluation at the 250 MeV XFEL test accelerator and for the final PSI-XFEL.
  • Participate in commissioning of the 250 MeV test accelerator, and later in the commissioning of the PSI-XFEL.
  • Participate in beam dynamics activities at the Swiss Light Source.

Your profile
A PhD in physics, mathematics or electrical engineering, a sound understanding of beam dynamics and several years of practical experience with an accelerator are requirements for this position.

We prefer a person with a broad profile, who has acquired a "feeling" for accelerators, rather than a highly specialized expert or a dedicated theoretician. But you also run your own simulations and have an understanding of underlying codes and their limitations.
