Selection: Candidates should appear in Management Aptitude Test (MAT) to be conducted by All India Management Association (AIMA) on December 7, 2008. No other MAT score will be accepted. Admission to Ph.D. Programme for the Academic Year 2009- 2010

National Institute of Immunology (NII) invites applications for its Ph.D. programme. Cutting-edge research at the Institute encompasses broad interdisciplinary areas -

Minimum qualifications:

  1. M.Sc. in any branch of Science (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics) or M.Tech. or M.B.B.S. or M.V.Sc. or M.Pharm. or equivalent qualification recognized by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, is required.

  2. First Division or equivalent grade or at least 60% of aggregate scores in all major examinations from Senior Secondary Certificate (10+2) onwards is required.

  3. Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination this year may also apply; they will be admitted provisionally pending satisfactory fulfillment of the above requirements.

  4. Reservations are as per statutory norms.

Selection procedure :

  1. Candidates fulfilling minimum requirements will be invited for a written qualifying test at their own expenses on February 15, 2009 at either of the following four centres - Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata & Pune. The Institute shall try to accommodate the choice of centers indicated by the candidate. However, in case of non-availability of a seat at the centers chosen by the candidate, the candidate shall be required to appear for the written qualifying test at the centre allotted by the Institute.

  2. The written test is aimed at evaluating abilities to comprehend, analyse and reason. Therefore, the examination is General Aptitude Test & no separate syllabus is prescribed.

  3. The results of the written test along with the details of the interviews shall be available on the website of the Institute as well as on the Notice Board of the Institute on February 20, 2009.

  4. Interviews will be held at National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi from June 4-7, 2009. The Interviews will be held in two stages. The candidates will be short-listed for the final interview based on their performance in the first interview. Final interview will be held in the last two days.

  5. The selected candidates would be paid second class train fare for joining the Ph.D. programme on providing the proof of journey.

  6. Candidates selected after the interviews will be enrolled for the Ph.D. programme of NII in academic affiliation with JNU, New Delhi.

PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSION OF ONLINE APPLICATION

FACILITY FOR ONLINE APPLICATION SHALL BE AVAILABLE UP TO 4TH DECEMBER 2008. HOWEVER THE APPLICANTS HAVE TO ENSURE THAT THE HARD COPY OF THE ONLINE RECEIPT AND ADMIT CARD FORM REACHES NII ON OR BEFORE 8TH DECEMBER 2008.

Instructions :

  1. Please read the following instructions carefully before starting the online registration.

  2. Obtain a Demand Draft for Rs. 100/- (Rs. 50/- in case of SC/ST candidates, provided relevant documentary proof is enclosed) of six months validity in favour of ‘Director, National Institute of Immunology’, payable at Canara Bank, Jit Singh Marg, New Delhi.

  3. Name of the Candidate and date of birth should be entered exactly as shown in the Senior Secondary School Certificate or equivalent.

  4. After filling the required details in the online application form, a receipt and Admit Card form will be generated in the PDF format. Eligibility for Faculty of Science & Humanities:
Master’s degree in Mathematics/ Statistics/Chemistry/Physics/Humanities (English Language
Teaching) with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) or equivalent, [for SC/ST
candidates, the minimum mark is 50% marks (CGPA 5.5/10)] and a valid GATE score or
UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET fellowship in the relevant areas tenable from the current year. Candidates
applying for External registration do not require GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET fellowship.
The maximum age for admission to Ph.D. programme is 50 years.
HOW TO APPLY?
1. Use only the appropriate Application Forms downloaded from NITC Website.
2. Candidates applying for admission to different departments will have to write the
corresponding codes in the appropriate columns in the Application Form.
3. A passport size photograph taken not earlier than 3 months is to be affixed on the
Application Form. The photo in the application should be self-attested. Additional six
copies of the same photograph and one stamp size photograph should be produced at
the time of counseling/admission.
4. Demand Draft towards application fee (Rs. 600/- for Open and External candidates,
Rs. 300/- for SC/ST candidates drawn in favour of "Director NIT Calicut" payable at
State Bank of India, NIT Calicut Branch (Code No. 2207) is to be enclosed.
5. The following documents arranged in the order given below should be enclosed along with the
application (whichever is applicable):
i. Self attested copy of valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET fellowship in the relevant

PhD in Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology


Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, invites applications from candidates who are bonafide Indian citizens and having consistently good academic record. Candidates should have strong motivation to pursue research in modern biology leading to a Ph.D degree. The projects offered for Ph.D would be in the broad areas of
(i) Biotechnology and Biomedicine
(ii) Genetics and Evolution
(iii) Cell Biology and Development
(iv) Molecular Biology

(v) Bioinformatics and Theoretical Biology.

Candidates who satisfy the following criteria only need apply:
1. Should have an M.Sc. degree in any area of biological/physical/chemical sciences including mathematics and qualified in the CSIR-UGC (NET) examination for Junior Research Fellowship. The Fellowship Certificate should be valid as on the date of joining. (Candidates qualified only for Lecturership in CSIR-UGC (NET) examination need not apply.

2. Candidates qualified in ICMR-JRF examination under Life Sciences may apply. Admission will be subject to their qualifying in the CCMB written test/interview and award of Fellowship by ICMR.

3. Candidates qualified in DBT-JRF examination can also apply.

4. Engineering (B.E. & B.Tech.) or B.Pharm graduates with Biotechnology as a subject of study and have qualified in GATE examination with a minimum of 85 percentile may also apply for award of Research Fellowship subject to their qualifying in the written test/interview and award of fellowship by CSIR. The GATE certificate should be valid as on the date of joining.

5. Students with non-life sciences background (having master degree in Mathematics/Statistics/Physics/Chemistry and B.Tech in Computer Sciences or other Engineering discipline) are specifically encouraged to apply, if they have high desire and motivation in doing interdisciplinary research in Life Sciences.


6. Students with MBBS with first division may also apply. Selected candidates should also qualify/obtain the Senior Research Fellowship conducted by the Human Resource Development Group, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, to pursue PhD in CCMB.


7. Upper age limit is 28 years as on 8.12.2008 which is relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST/OBC/Women/Physically Handicapped candidates.

Written Test and Interview : All the applications will be screened and candidates found suitable will be called for written test on 16.1.2009 at CCMB, Hyderabad. Candidates qualified in the written test will have to appear for interview on 17th & 18th January , 2009. Candidates selected in the interview will have to stay for discussions on 19.1.2009 with Scientists at CCMB regarding allotment of projects for the Ph.D. programme. Traveling Allowance is not payable by CCMB and candidates have to make their own arrangements for stay, etc. at Hyderabad.

Candidates who have qualified in CSIR-UGC NET Fellowship or ICMR-JRF or DBT-JRF can also walk in on the day of the written test (16th January, 2009) at 7.30 AM in CCMB along with proof of their qualification for the respective fellowship. They are requested to send an email intimating the same to AO, CCMB at coa@ccmb.res.in.
Mere fulfilling of the minimum requirements stipulated in the notification would not automatically entitle a person for selection. The decision of the Centre in this regard shall be final. Canvassing in any form and/or bringing in any influence, political or otherwise, will be treated as a disqualification.

Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials and a DD for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST candidates) drawn in any nationalized bank and payable at Guwahati in favour of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati should be sent to the Head of the concerned Department/Centre, IIT Guwahati, Guwahati – 781039, to reach on or before 14 November 2008. Admission to Foreign Students

The applications of sponsored or self-financed foreign national candidates will also be considered for admission to the PhD Programmes. For prescribed academic criteria, please see the eligibility criteria for PhD programmes. The desirous foreign nationals will submit their complete bio-data with regard to their academic qualifications indicating clearly (1) the class obtained, (2) percentage of marks where marks are awarded and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) or equivalent where grades are awarded, and (3) proficiency in English.

Please download the application form (.doc, .pdf), take a print out, fill it and send it to the Dean of Academic Affairs, IIT Guwahati, Guwahati-781 039, India. Also, please send an advance copy of the completed application form by fax to +91-361-258 2090/2690762. The last date of receipt of application form from foreign candidates is 14 November 2008.

 

Fees:

Foreign students from countries under South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) have to pay US Dollars (USD) 2,000/- or equivalent amount as fees every year. For students from non-SAARC countries, the fee is USD 4,000/- or equivalent amount per year. This excludes the hostel admission and mess bills.

Accommodation:

Foreign students can stay in the hostels along with Indian students. The hostel rooms are single-seated. Limited number of quarter-type accommodation for married students is also available. Mess bills in hostels are around Indian Rupees (INR) 1,500/- per month for basic menu. Only Indian food is served in the hostels.

Research Programmes : Admission Requirements

Qualification
  • A good relevant Bachelor's Degree and/or Master's Degree.
  • NUS graduates should have at least a 2nd Upper Honors.
  • The ability to pursue research in the candidate's proposed field of advanced study.

GRE / GATE scores
  • All applicants must submit either GRE or GATE test scores.
  • The minimum requirement for GATE score is 1800 or 90 percentile.
  • The minimum requirement for GRE score is:
    Verbal Ability : 500, Quantitative Ability : 700, Analytical Writing : 3.5
  • Applicants with NUS or NTU Honors degree are not required to submit GRE/GATE test scores.

TOEFL / IELTS scores
  • Applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English should submit TOEFL/IELTS scores as evidence of their proficiency in the English Language.
  • The minimum requirement for TOEFL score is:
    Paper-Based Test : 580, Computer-Based Test : 260, Internet-Based Test : 85

Research Programmes : Scholarships and Research Grants

NUS Research Scholarship
The University offers financial assistance to full-time graduate research students through its Research Scholarships. They are awarded to outstanding candidates to pursue a full-time graduate research degree at NUS. A limited number of scholarships is available each academic year. They are therefore awarded on a very competitive basis.
Applicants should be university graduates with at least second class honours (upper division) degree or equivalent and at the time of the award of the Research Scholarship, must have applied for and been assured of admission as a candidate for a higher degree research programme at this University. There is no restriction on the nationality of applicants.

President Graduate Fellowship (PGF)
The President Graduate Fellowship (PGF) is awarded to candidates who show exceptional promise or accomplishment in research. A number of Ph.D. research students are selected each semester by the University for the award.
The PGF is open to full-time candidates of all nationalities. Incoming Ph.D. students and current NUS Research Scholars who have passed the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination (QE) are eligible to be considered for the award.

OR

Applicants with B.Tech./B.Arch. degree or equivalent in respective discipline with excellent academic record (with a minimum CGPA of 7.00 on a 10 point scale or equivalent or 70% marks) may be considered eligible for admission.

Applicants for admission for full-time studies who do not possess a M.Tech./M.Arch./MURP degree or equivalent in the relevant field must have a valid GATE score (at least 75 percentile) for Engineering / Technology/ Science disciplines or must have qualified national level fellowship examinations such as NET (JRF/LS) conducted by UGC/CSIR for Science/ Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines.

Engineering/Architecture graduates from any IIT/erstwhile University of Roorkee having CGPA Score > 8.00 or marks > 80% are also eligible for admission without GATE score .

Reservation/Relaxation

a) Relaxation in eligibility requirement in terms of minimum CGPA upto 5.5 or 55% marks in aggregate will be given to SC/ST, physically handicapped applicants and those with M.A. English (for admission to Ph.D. English in the Deptt. of Humanities and Social Sciences of IIT Roorkee) as per Institute regulations.

b) Person with Disability (PD) applicants may be permitted relaxation in eligibility requirement of CGPA to 5.5 on a 10 point scale or equivalent, or to 55% marks as per regulations.

c) For the SC/ST applicants minimum GATE score requirement will be 50 percentile.

d) Reservation for OBC/SC/ST will be as per Govt. of India directive/Institute rules.

Separate applications be sent for separate departments. Application form with other detailed information can also be obtained from the Chairman, PG Admission-2009, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee 247 667 by sending a demand draft for Rs. 250/- in favour of Chairman, PG Admission, IITR and a self addressed envelope (23 x 17 cm).
