 Admission to Ph. D. Program IISER Pune

Applications are invited for the Ph. D. program scheduled to commence from August 2009 in the following areas of basic sciences:

 1.  Biological Sciences

 2.  Chemical Sciences

 3.  Mathematical Sciences

 4.  Physical Sciences

 Eligibility

General Criteria:

Nationality: Indian

Age: Not more than 28 years on August 01, 2009 (Born on/after August 01, 1981)

 

Science Stream	Minimum Educational Qualifications*
Biological Sciences	First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST) in: M. Sc. Life Sciences or equivalent B.Tech/M.Tech /MBBS degree holders may also apply
Chemical Sciences	First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST) in: M. Sc. or equivalent degree in Chemistry/Physics/Biochemistry/Material Science
Mathematical Sciences	First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST) in: M. A./M. Sc. Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Science or M. Stat.
Physical Sciences	First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST) in: M. Sc. or equivalent degree in Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics OR B. Tech. or equivalent degree in Engineering Physics/Electrical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering

 * Candidates who are appearing for the final year of their qualifying degree examination are also eligible to apply. However, they must submit attested copies of qualifying degree certificates/final transcripts on or before 30^th September, 2009, failing which admission will stand cancelled.

 Candidates should have qualified the CSIR-NET/GATE/JEST or equivalent examination valid for the current year in the relevant area of research. Candidates with valid UGC-CSIR JRF are eligible for fellowship directly from UGC or CSIR. Students selected for Ph. D. program based on GATE/JEST scores, are eligible for financial aid (Assistantship/Scholarship) from IISER, Pune.

 Selection Procedure

Eligible candidates that meet the minimum educational qualifications and satisfy the additional criteria set by the departments will be called for an interview by the selection committee of the respective departments.

Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview, the departmental selection committee will recommend candidates to the Chairman for admission to the Ph. D. program. 

 How to Apply

The application form is available below. Else, the form can be obtained by post, or in person, from the IISER Pune administrative office (for postal address see below). In case of request by post, please enclose a self-addressed envelope (A4 size, 21 cm X 30 cm) affixed with postage stamps of Rs. 22/-.

Candidates intending to apply to more than one program should use separate application forms for each program with appropriate enclosures. 

• Fill the application form completely. Incomplete application forms will be rejected. The application form can either be typed or hand written.
• Send attested copies of all supporting documents (mark sheets, certificates, age proof, caste certificate, etc.).
• Attach one letter of recommendation
• Only for candidates applying to the Biology program: please submit a one-page statement of research interests
• Mail the full application package to the address mentioned below.

Important Dates/Mailing Address

The last date for postal requests for Application Forms is April 27, 2009. Forms can also be obtained in person from theAdministrative Office. Photocopies or forms downloaded from the website are also acceptable.
